Postgame Quotes

Attendance: 49,950
Sept. 17, 2011

Minnesota Head Coach Jerry Kill
On players chanting his name in the locker room…

“It’s a nice moment, but really the assistant coaches deserve the credit for this win. The coaches did a great job putting together a game plan and the players executed it. We probably won the game because the fans in the final two minutes were on their feet making it hard for Miami to hear.”

On the week leading up to the game…
“It was a long five or six days. I appreciate my wife’s support and my family’s support. There are a lot of people to thank. I had very little to do with this win. I want to thank Doctor Pat Smith, he spent a lot of time with me this week.”

On Gray’s play…
“You can see him gaining confidence. There is a lot he still needs to learn. We can’t run him 25 times a game, and we have to be careful with that. It is a building year and people will need to be patient.”

On special teams…
“We blocked a punt and that is how we won the game. If we don’t block that punt, we wouldn’t have won. We need to find ways to win a game.”

Sophomore Running Back Duane Bennett
On the emotions of having coach Jerry Kill back...
“All the players felt for Coach, but we needed to go out there and handle it… We know that Coach Kill wanted us to do everything right.”

On being calm today...
“Being an all around team player you got to go out there and perform … Taking the back seat means nothing to me if it means we’re going to get a win¸ so you know I’m all about the wins.”

On the game...
“I think the biggest thing that helped was communication on the sideline.”

Freshman Running Back Donnell Kirkwood
On the feelings toward end of game...
“Watch the clock, down and distance… The number one thing is win, win, win… We need to go back this week in practice and work hard and build off this.”

Junior Quarterback Marqueis Gray
On emotions all week...
“Going into the first practice we all came together.. We had to come out strong even though Coach Kill wasn’t there we still had to execute.”

On being worried about Coach Kill...
“I think any team would be worried about their head coach when they see something happen like that… We were down a little bit this week but when he came back on Thursday it just gave us that much more momentum to go into this game and play for him, play for ourselves and get that win.”

On breaking Sandy Stephens’s record...
“They told me about the record but I’m just happy about the win.”

Junior Linebacker Mike Rallis
On Miami (Ohio)...
“We give a lot of credit to them (Miami); they’re a great team... They fought hard to come back, but I’m proud of what this team did today… Tomorrow we will start to look at North Dakota State.”

Miami (Ohio) Head Coach Don Treadwell

Feelings of the game…

"We had some opportunities. I think when you’re in a game with a big ten opponent, and your driving the ball down the field and you still have a chance to win, that is a positive. That’s always going to bother you that you didn’t come out on a victory side but there’s no question we played a good team tonight. They played very inspired as well. "

On MarQueis Gray…
"We had a lot of respect for him coming in, and he just demonstrated why we had so much respect for him in my opinion."

On Zac Dysert scrambling…
"I don’t know if people know this or not but Minnesota has a tremendous pass rush… and they did a good job of taking advantage of our youth at times."

On continuing to improve this season…
"It will be nice for us that we don’t have a bye, to have to sit around for two weeks and sort out things. It will be nice to get right back in the thick of it and for us; we open up the conference play next week."

Senior defensive back Anthony Kokal

On Marqueis Gray

“It’s tough to play a guy like that, a guy that can break tackles like that. He’s such a big body. You try to prepare for it, but you don’t know what you’re going to get until its game day. You’ve got to give him credit. He definitely can play.”

Junior quarterback Zac Dysert

On game

“This kind of opportunity is definitely a learning experience and something we have to build on as a team.”

On loss
“They were better than us today. A couple breaks here and there. It could have turned the other way. They were better than us today. That’s all you can say.”

Senior defensive tackle Jordain Brown

On Marqueis Gray

“He’s a versatile guy. You have to game plan for the offense and well as for the elusiveness of the quarterback.”

On playing at home next week
“It’s going to feel great. But I would have loved to have won one away, just to get that first road win under your belt. It gives you a lot of confidence.”
