New Mexico State head coach Doug Martin
What are your initial thoughts on the game and how your team played tonight?
“Well, we got the right heart. I really think we’ve got the right character. These kids have come a long, long way. The difference in the game was two fourth-down conversions that we don’t make and then the punt that we gave up for the touchdown. If we don’t do those things, we’re hurting ourselves. We have to gain but we’re getting better, we’re proving we can play. King Davis showed up a little bit tonight too, and gives us another weapon. We got some wins coming our way we just have to keep working.”
The offense really seemed to move the ball in the middle of the field, but had some trouble finishing drives late, talk a little about that?
“Yeah we got hurt on some fourth-down conversions and didn’t protect as well as we needed to at times. We just got to be better on offense. But we’ll get there.”
It seemed like the defense really started off strong and maybe some of the big plays gotcha there?
“Yeah, 14 points were scored without us even being on the field, with the punt and the fumble recoveries so I think our defense played pretty sound. We got a turnover forced that we didn’t convert to any points also. We’re making progress defensively. Our situation is, as soon as the quarterback thing gets solidified, we’re making plays with that position, we’re going to be a pretty good football team.”
How important is the rivalry game against UTEP next week?\
“Yup, that’s where it all starts. Right now, our season starts next Saturday. We need fans here. The fans that were here were awesome tonight. We need more here next week because our season starts next week.
Minnesota head coach Jerry Kill
The running backs showed up tonight and ran well you said earlier this this week that you had a good week of practice?
"They practiced well, and they got rewarded for practicing. You earn your things when you work hard. So I thought they did, I thought Phillip played a good game."
Defensively, a lot was made about their no huddle and how they changed a lot of things at the line, how do you think your defense adjusted that?
"Well I'll tell you it was pretty warm, and they played again it was kind of like last week. We play a lot we didn't give up a big exposed play. I think towards the end, but other than that we did a good job keeping the ball. We have to look at the film, I know we had some misfits and things that we have to continue working on and get clean.
