The Spring Game promised to be a competitive matchup in a Maroon vs. Gold battle and it proved to be just that with Gold coming out on top, 24-20, over Maroon to take home the first ever Goldy Cup.
The game was played in four 15-minute quarters with running clock in the first three. Rodney Smith was awarded the first-ever Sid Hartman MVP of the Spring Game.
Smith captained the Gold team and wasted no time putting them on the board when Zack Annexstad flushed out of the pocket and connected with him for a 56-yard touchdown strike. Annexstad went 11-for-18 for 186 yards and one touchdown for Gold.
Smith found the end one again early in the second quarter with a 31-yard touchdown rush. His evening ended early but he still finished with five rushes for 67 yards and a touchdown along with his 56-yard touchdown reception.
Maroon found themselves down 14-3 late in the first half when Tyler Johnson made a one handed, highlight reel catch for a 33-yard touchdown from Tanner Morgan. The duo again connected to start the second half, this time from 23 yards out. Morgan finished 18-28 for 272 yards and two touchdowns while Johnson hauled in six catches for 120 yards and two touchdowns.
This @T_Muhneyy10 catch was so absurd, @GopherFootball should start the 2018 season with 7 points already on the board. 😱

Head Coach P.J. Fleck stopped action at one point after a forced fumble. He directed the entire crowd's attention toward the big screen for a replay but what popped up instead was a scholarship reveal for Maple Grove, Minn. native Sam Renner.

After Emmit Carpenter nailed a field goal for each team, Gold completed a 15-play, 86-yard drive led by Annexstad. The drive took up just under seven minutes and resulted in a go-ahead touchdown with just 58 seconds left in the game. Redshirt junior Jonathan Femi-Cole capped off the drive with a one-yard touchdown to give the Gold team a 24-20 lead.
Down four, the Maroon team started the final drive on their own 25-yard line with just under a minute in the game. Morgan would drive the Maroon squad 56-yards in the final minute and reached the 19-yard line with just three seconds left in the game. With the game on the line Gold made one final stop.
Alongside Morgan on the Maroon offense was redshirt freshman Mohamed Ibrahim, who finished with 16 attempts for 95 yards.
The Gophers will wrap up Spring football in the coming days, and will then return in early August for the 2018 season. Minnesota begins the 2018 season on Aug. 30 against New Mexico State at TCF Bank Stadium.
