Dan O'Brien is in his sixth season with the University of Minnesota football program. He serves as the Associate Athletics Director for Football and also as a liaison with the high school football coaches in Minnesota as the Director of High School Relations.
O'Brien also has experience working at the NAIA, NCAA Division III, NCAA Division II and NCAA Division I levels. He also has high school coaching experience.
O'Brien came to Minnesota after spending nearly six years as director of athletics at Hamline University in St. Paul, Minn. During his tenure with the Hamline athletic department, O'Brien saw the number of Hamline student-athletes competing in the postseason rise from one to 121 during his tenure.
Under O'Brien's leadership, 23 Hamline teams qualified for MIAC or national postseason play or finished the season in the top four in the conference.
Prior to joining the staff at Hamline, O'Brien was emplolyed at Concordia University-St. Paul from 1995-2002 in capacities which included head football coach and director of athletics. During his time at Concordia-St. Paul, he was instrumental in moving the Golden Bears athletic program from the NAIA level to NCAA Division II.
As the head football coach, O'Brien led Concordia-St. Paul to its first two football wins as a member of NCAA Division II. He began his tenure at Concordia as assistant head football coach. He was promoted to and served as head coach in 1999 and 2000, while also working as director of athletics.
O'Brien was inducted into Concordia's Athletics Hall of Fame on Oct. 5, 2012 during Homecoming weekend.
O'Brien was the head coach at Bemidji High School from 1993 through 1995. He was an assistant coach at Lakeville High School from 1989-93 and began his coaching career in 1987 at Benilde-St. Margaret's High School.
As an undergraduate at the University of St. Thomas, O'Brien earned All-Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference honors as a defensive back. He played for St. Thomas for three seasons, serving as a team captain during his final two years. Prior to his time at St. Thomas, he earned all-conference honors at Normandale Community College and played in the Midwest Bowl.
O'Brien is a 1987 graduate of St. Thomas and is a native of Winthrop, Minn.
