Dom Barber is in his first year on the Minnesota staff and is a coordinator of alumni outreach relations, NFL liaison and recruiting assistant. Barber had previously volunteered for the Gophers before joining the program full-time.
Barber, who has a degree from Minnesota and played defensive back for the Gophers from 2004-07, returned to his alma mater after his playing days for the NFL’s Houston Texans (2008-11) were cut short by injury.
Barber attended Wayzata High School in Plymouth, Minn. and then played in 46 games for the Gophers. He made 191 tackles, defended 13 passes and notched four interceptions, all of which came during his junior season. His lone collegiate touchdown was a 45-yard interception return against Indiana.
He was selected by Houston in the sixth round (173rd overall) in the 2008 NFL Draft and signed with the Texans on June 19, 2008. In 39 NFL games, Barber registered 57 tackles, defended five passes, had a sack and made one interception. He also scored one touchdown, as he returned a fumble 48 yards for a score against the New York Jets in 2009.
Barber is the son of Marion and Karen Barber and his family has strong ties to the Minnesota program. His father, Marion Barber, played running back at Minnesota from 1977-80 and ranks sixth all-time in program history with 3,094 rushing yards. His brother, Marion Barber III, played running back at Minnesota from 2001-04 and ranks fourth all-time in program history with 3,276 rushing yards. His younger brother, Thomas, is a linebacker for the Gophers.
