Senior forward Rodney Williams had 15 points and senior forward Trevor Mbakwe added nine points and 12 rebounds as Minnesota rallied from a nine-point deficit to defeat Richmond, 72-57.

The Gophers are 17-10 all-time against teams currently in the Atlantic 10, including 1-1 against the University of Richmond. Minnesota defeated the Spiders 72-57 last season at Williams Arena.
Minnesota will be making its first trip to Richmond. The other two matchups in the series have occurred in the Twin Cities.
Richmond comes into the matchup 1-0 with a win over Belmont in its season opener.
The Gophers have managed 20 steals through two games this season, the most by any Big Ten team after the first two weeks of play. Austin Hollins leads the team with five steals while DeAndre Mathieu has four. Austin has 143 career steals which is currently the ninth-most in the history of the Golden Gopher program.
Andre Hollins has begun the season a perfect 12-of-12 from the free throw line. Hollins has a career free throw percentage of .853 (209-245), the best all-time at the University of Minnesota.
Junior DeAndre Mathieu has begun his Minnesota career with assist games of nine and five for a 7.0 assist per game average for the 2-0 Gophers. Minnesota has not had a player average more than 6.1 assists per game in the history of the program (assists were first compiled as an official statistic by the Big Ten and the University of Minnesota beginning with the 1974-75 season). Ray Williams (1976-77) dished out 166 assists in 26 games to currently hold the single-season assist average record. Arriel McDonald holds the Gophers' single-season record with 179 assists (1993-94).
Head Coach Richard Pitino announced the signing of three players to National Letters of Intent. Joining the squad next season will be forward Josh Martin (Seattle, Wash.), guard Nate Mason (Decatur, Ga) and guard Carlos Morris (Apalachicola, Fla). Martin & Mason will be freshmen while Morris is a junior college transfer.
