Fitzgerald Granted a Sixth-Year of Eligibility
May 23, 2017

University of Minnesota forward Davonte Fitzgerald was granted a sixth-year of eligibility today from the NCAA. Fitzgerald is now eligible to play for the Gophers in the 2017-18 season and the 2018-19 season.

“I am extremely excited and grateful that the NCAA has granted Davonte a sixth year,” said Minnesota head coach Richard Pitino. “He is a terrific member of our basketball program and deserves some good fortune. I am so happy for Davonte and can’t wait to get him back on the court.”

The 6-8, 220-pound Fitzgerald transferred from Texas A&M to Minnesota in May 2015 and sat out the 2015-16 season in accordance with NCAA rules. Fitzgerald then missed the entire 2016-17 season at Minnesota after suffering a torn ACL in October 2016.

Fitzgerald, who has yet to play for the Gophers, appeared in 49 games with six starts at Texas A&M. The Atlanta native totaled 262 points (5.3 ppg) and 94 rebounds (1.9 rpg) along with 22 blocks during his two seasons in College Station, where he averaged 12.6 minutes per game. In 2014-15, Fitzgerald saw action in 25 games during his sophomore campaign after a freshman season where he averaged 7.3 points and 2.3 rebounds per contest before missing the final 10 games due to a knee injury.

Prior to his time at Texas A&M, Fitzgerald was rated a three-star prospect by Rivals.com and ESPN. He averaged 22.8 points and 9.2 rebounds per game during his senior season at Tucker High School, where he earned all-state and district MVP honors.

Fitzgerald’s return should bolster an already strong Minnesota team that returns four starters and 11 letterwinners from last year’s squad which won 24 games, finished fourth in the Big Ten standings and earned a No. 5 seed in the NCAA Tournament.
