The rain held off enough for the Golden Gopher baseball team to play two intrasquad scrimmages this past weekend. The Gold Team holds a 2-1 lead over the Maroon Team in the Steak ‘n’ Beans series.
Gold took a 2-0 series lead on Friday with a 4-2 win. Matt Fiedler earned his second win of the fall. He pitched 3 1/3 scoreless innings in relief, giving up two hits and a walk while striking out four. Dalton Sawyer started and pitched three innings.
Michael Handel and Matt Halloran hit doubles for Maroon, with Halloran and Bobby Juan driving in the team’s two runs on Friday. Toby Anderson started on the mound for Maroon and retired 12 batters in four innings, striking out three.
On Saturday, Steak ‘n’ Beans Game 3 was part of the Gophers’ Parents/Scout Day. Maroon won 3-2. Handel and Tony Skjefte each doubled and scored. Jake Bergren also hit a double. Halloran and Austin Athmann each had an RBI for Maroon. Jordan Jess pitched four shutout innings, Ben Meyer pitched three innings and Lance Thonvold retired Gold’s final two batters.
Fiedler and Tatera each had two hits for Gold. Fiedler and Jordan Smith had the Gold Team’s two RBI as Tatera and Chris Schaaf scored. Alec Crawford pitched the first 3 2/3 innings for Gold and gave up one run on one hit.
Gophers Win First Game In U.S. Bank Stadium
The University of Minnesota picked up the first Division I baseball victory inside of U.S. Bank Stadium Friday as they defeated Seattle University 13-4.
