Trailing 4-0 after four innings, the Gold Team scored seven runs in the bottom of the seventh to come back and earn a 7-4 win over the Maroon Team, during the annual Parent's Day on Saturday, Oct. 1. With the win, the Gold and Maroon Team are now tied, 2-2 in the annual Steak 'N Beans series at Siebert Field.
JT Canakes had a team-best two RBI on two hits in four at bats. Michael Handel, David Bettenburg and Matt Puhl all had two hits, an RBI and scored a run, while Kurt Schlangen also had an RBI and a walk, while Mark Tatera had an RBI on one hit. Dan Olinger walked once and scored a run, while Trip Schultz added a double.
Ben Meyer started for the Gold Team and pitched three innings, facing a game-high 11 batters. He allowed three hits, one earned run, walked two and struck out two. Ty McDevitt pitched two innings (six batters) and held Maroon scoreless and had one hit. Kyle O'Shea was the game's winning pitcher striking out three and one hit. Tom Windle saw action in the last two innings and collected a save. He struck out three of his eight batters faced, allowed two hits, but held Maroon scoreless.
Troy Larson led the Maroon Team in hitting when he connected for a triple and a double in the game. In all, he had three hits, two RBI and scored a run. Chris Schaaf went 2-3 with two doubles and had an RBI. Matt Halloran held the Maroon's other RBI when he went 1-4.
Jordan Jess started the game for the Maroon Team and pitched 2.2 innings. During that span, he stymied the Gold Team, striking out four and holding them scoreless. DJ Snelten came in and pitched 2.1 innings and allowed just one hit and struck out two. Lance Thonvold faced the most batters in the game (13) and allowed six runs, while Alex Tukey pitched 1.2 innings and allowed one earned run and two hits.
In the Steak 'N Beans Series, Canakes lead Minnesota hitters in batting average (.538) and RBI (5) and hits (7) in 13 plate apperances. Olinger is holding a .400 batting average with six hits in 15 at bats. Ryan Abrahamson is batting .357 with five hits and three doubles, while Handel is batting .353 with six hits and two doubles. Four Minnesota pitchers have over five innings pitched. Jess hasn't allowed a run in 5.2 innings pitched (18 batters). Meyer has gone 5.1 and holds an ERA of 1.69 (20 batters faced), while TJ Oakes holds an ERA of 3.17, facing the most batters this fall (24). Austin Lubinsky has pitched 5.1 and held the Maroon Team scoreless and allowed just three hits.
Next game will be on Oct. 7 at Siebert Field. The game is scheduled for a 3:45 p.m. start.
