Smith lettered and played with the Gopher baseball team from 1995-96. Named the team's most improved in 1995, he went on to become a first-team All-Big Ten honoree at third base in 1996. Recruited out of Menomonie, Wis., to play football for Jim Wacker's team, Smith played both football and baseball, and eventually focused solely on baseball.
