ABCA: NCAA Div. I All-Region Teams announced (6/13/18)
The American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) announced Wednesday the ABCA/Rawlings NCAA Div. I All-Region Teams with five members of the Gopher Baseball team landing honors in the Mideast Region.
Junior Terrin Vavra and freshmen Patrick Fredrickson and Max Meyer achieved First Team All-Mideast Region status while outfielder Ben Mezzenga and designated hitter Toby Hanson represented Minnesota on the Second Team. ABCA/Rawlings All-Region First Team selections move on for consideration for ABCA/Rawlings All-America honors.
Vavra batted a team-leading .386 in 58 games for the Maroon & Gold, ranking 20th in the nation in the category. The First Team All-Big Ten selection drove in 59 runs and crossed the plate 55 times. He ranked in the top 50 in the country with his 86 hits, and in the top 100 with a .455 on-base percentage and .614 slugging percentage. At 10.1 plate appearances per strikeout, he was the 81st toughest-to-strike-out in the country. He also led the Gophers with 10 home runs and four triples while drawing 30 walks compared to just 22 strikeouts. Vavra was named a First Team All-America by Baseball America, D1Baseball.com, NCBWA, and Perfect Game.
Fredrickson has earned Freshman All-America honors from both Collegiate Baseball and the NCBWA -- including being named both organization's Freshman Pitcher of the Year -- while landing on the Second Team All-America from Collegiate Baseball and D1Baseball. The right-hander posted a 9-0 record in 19 appearances including 15 starts for the Maroon & Gold. The native of Gig Harbor, Washington finished with a 1.86 ERA in 97.0 innings, striking out 73 batters compared to just 27 walks. Opponents hit just .209 against the Big Ten's Pitcher and Freshman of the Year. His ERA ranked 12th in the nation while his 1.01 WHIP and 6.59 hits per nine innings were each among the top 50 in the nation.
Meyer earlier this season earned Collegiate Baseball's Freshman Reliever of the Year award and Freshman All-America honors from both Collegiate Baseball and the NCBWA, as well as landing Third Team All-America honors from Collegiate Baseball and D1Baseball. The First Team All-Big Ten pick made 23 appearances out of the Minnesota bullpen during his rookie campaign, tying the program record of 16 saves originally set by Brian Glowicki during the 2017 season. The native of Woodbury, Minnesota struck out 54 batters in 43.2 innings, posting a 2-3 record with a 2.06 ERA. Opposing batters hit just .163 against him, and he allowed less than one baserunner per inning with a 0.94 WHIP. Meyer's 16 saves rank third in the nation this season.
Mezzenga finished just behind Vavra with a .383 batting average, ranking 26th in the country. The product of Shoreview, Minnesota reached base at a clip of .464, ranking 50th in the country. He slugged eight doubles and a pair of triples in his 72 hits, while swiping 12 bags on the year. The Second Team All-Big Ten selection drove in 28 runs for the Maroon & Gold and also crossed the plate 40 times. After starting the season as a back-up, he appeared in 59 games and took over starting duties in an outfield spot for the final 50 contests.
Hanson battled through injuries to be one of the Gophers' most productive hitters at the DH position. The Delano, Minnesota native batted .318 while appearing in 49 games including 48 starts, collecting 55 hits including 16 doubles, two triples, and three home runs, including a pair in the NCAA tournament. He drove in 33 runs and crossed the plate 31 times. Hanson drew 23 walks and even swiped five bases.
