NCBWA: Freshman Pitcher & Hitter of the Year (June 12, 2018)
NCBWA: Freshman All-America Teams (June 11, 2018)
LYNCHBURG, Va. – The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) bestowed its National Freshman Pitcher of the Week honor on Gopher Baseball starting pitcher Patrick Fredrickson. He and Minnesota relief pitcher Max Meyer also landed spots on the NCBWA’s Freshman All-America First Team.
Fredrickson also earned Collegiate Baseball’s Freshman Pitcher of the Year Award and Second Team All-America and Freshman All-America designations from the same organization. The Gig Harbor, Washington posted a 9-0 record in 19 appearances including 15 starts for the Maroon & Gold. The Big Ten’s Pitcher and Freshman of the Year finished with a 1.86 ERA in 97.0 innings, striking out 73 batters compared to just 27 walks. Opponents hit just .209 against the right-hander. His ERA ranked 12th in the nation while his 1.01 WHIP and 6.59 hits per nine innings were each among the top 50 in the nation.
Meyer earned Freshman All-America honors and the title of Freshman Reliever of the Year from Collegiate Baseball as well as landing on its All-America Third Team. The First Team All-Big Ten pick made 23 appearances out of the Minnesota bullpen during his rookie campaign, tying the program record of 16 saves originally set by Brian Glowicki during the 2017 season. The native of Woodbury, Minnesota struck out 54 batters in 43.2 innings, posting a 2-3 record with a 2.06 ERA. Opposing batters hit just .163 against him, and he allowed fewer than one baserunner per inning with a 0.94 WHIP. Meyer’s 16 saves rank third in the nation this season.
Nominees for NCBWA awards are submitted by collegiate sports information directors and reviewed by members of the organization.
The 2018 season marks the first time since 2003 that Minnesota has had multiple Freshman All-America selections as pitcher Glen Perkins and catcher/designated hitter Andy Hunter both tabbed the honor that season.
