Summer Roundup: June 9

Multiple Gophers will be playing in summer leagues this year while alumni are playing in the minor leagues or independent ball. Keep up to date with them with our weekly Summer Roundup.

Minor Leagues

Austin Athmann (West Michigan Whitecaps/Class A) – Athmann has a .232 batting average in 142 plate appearances this season. He has hit two home runs, six doubles and has drove in 13 runs. Athmann has a .992 fielding percentage in 33 games behind the plated and has thrown out 17-22 (.773) base runners.

Matt Fiedler (State College Spikes/Class A Short Season) – Fiedler has yet to make his 2017 debut because he is rehabbing an injury while the Spikes won't begin their season until after the MLB Draft.

Jordan Jess (West Virginia Power/Class A) – Jess is 0-2 in 16 relief appearances but has a 2.54 ERA. He has struck out 32 batters while opponents have just a .216 batting average against him. Jess has only walked seven batters in 28.1 innings.

Ben Meyer (Jupiter Hammerheads/Class A Advanced) – Meyer began the season with the Class A Greensboro Grasshoppers where was 2-0 with a 2.15 ERA in 12 appearances and struck out 40 batters. After being promoted, Meyer is 1-0 and has yet to give up a run. He has allowed only three hits while striking out 11 batters. Opposing batters have a .125 batting average against him.

Dalton Sawyer (Beloit Snappers/Class A) – Sawyer is 4-3 in 12 appearances, eight of which were starts. He has posted a 2.25 ERA and has struck out 64 batters while opponents have a .178 batting average against him. Sawyer has recorded five games where he has struck out seven or more batters.

DJ Snelten (Sacramento River Cats/Triple-A) – Snelten began his 2017 in Double-A Richmond where he was 4-1 with a 1.66 ERA and 28 strikeouts in 15 relief appearances. Since being promoted, Snelten has posted a 3.38 ERA in six games. He has seven strikeouts while only allowing two hits. Opponents have a .077 batting average versus Snelten this season.

Tom Windle (Williamsport Crosscutters/Class A Short Season) – Windle has yet to play a game this season.

Independent League

Nate Hanson (St. Paul Saints) – Hanson has a .321 batting average in 78 at-bats so far this season. He has hit four home runs, seven doubles and has drove in 19 runs in 20 games.

Dan Motl (Sioux Falls Canaries) – In 61 at-bats this season, Motl¬ has a .230 batting average with two doubles and eight RBIs. He has drawn seven walks while scoring four runs.

Seth Rosin (St. Paul Saints) – Rosin has made six relief appearances where has recorded four saves. In 6.1 innings he has struck out five batters and has a 0.00 ERA.

Northwoods League

Ben Mezzenga (Eau Claire Express) – Mezzenga has played in two games for the Express where he has drawn three walks.

Nick Lackney (Willmar Stingers) – Lackney has made two appearances and one start for the Stingers. He has posted a 2.57 ERA with seven strikeouts.

Eduardo Estrada, Jr. (Willmar Stingers) – Estrada has three hits in seven games for Willmar, one of which was a triple. He has picked up two walks, one RBI and scored two runs.

Eli Wilson (Willmar Stingers) – Wilson has picked up two hits and two RBIs in three games for the Stingers this summer.

Gabe Knowles (Duluth Huskies) – Knowles has recorded seven hits in nine games for the Huskies. He has walked five times while scoring five runs and driving in two runs. He is also 1-2 in stolen bases this summer.

Jack Wassel (Rockford Rivets) – Wassel has played in seven games for the Rivets where he has recorded two hits and seven walks. He has scored three runs.

Jackson Rose (St. Cloud Rox) – Rose is 1-0 in two relief appearances for the Rox. He has struck out five opposing batters in three innings while only allowing one hit.

Jake Stevenson (St. Cloud Rox) – Stevenson has two relief appearances for the Rox this summer. In 5.2 scoreless innings he has three strikeouts.

Perfect Game

Luke Pettersen (Saugerties Stallions) – Pettersen made his Stallions debut last night where he went 0-5.

Coastal Plain League

Riley Smith (Holly Springs Salamanders) – Smith has played in one game for the Salamanders where he went 0-3 but recorded two assists in the field.
