Gophers Earn Academic Big Ten Honors
June 1, 2016

MINNEAPOLIS (GopherSports.com) – A total of 145 University of Minnesota student-athletes were honored by the Big Ten Conference on the Academic All-Big Ten Team for spring and at-large sports, the conference announced on Tuesday. The Gophers totaled 282 Academic All-Big Ten honorees for the 2015-16 academic year.

Five members of the Maroon & Gold track & field team (Alex Beckman, Amanda Beckman, Jess Lehman and Lyndsey Thorpe, Kaila Urick) carried unblemished cumulative grade point averages while the program was one of two Minnesota teams, along with rowing, to lead the spring and at-large sports with 29 Academic All-Big Ten honorees each. Men’s track & field added 22 accolades followed by baseball with 16, women’s hockey with 14 and softball with 12. Men’s golf featured seven award winners while women’s tennis carried six and men’s tennis and women’s golf recorded five each. A total of 10 Minnesota programs boasted Academic All-Big Ten honorees for the spring and at-large sports.

To be eligible for Academic All-Big Ten selection, students must be letterwinners who are in at least their second academic year at their institution and carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or higher.
