The Big Ten Conference has announced that DJ Snelten has been named the Big Ten Pitcher of the Week after his Saturday performance against Illinois. This is the second award this season for Snelten and Minnesota's seventh weekly honor this season.
Snelten helped solidify Minnesota's Big Ten Tournament berth when he scattered seven hits in eight innings against Illinois in the 2-0 shutout win. On the day, Snelten struck out five and walked one batter, which didn't come until the top of the ninth. Snelten threw 113 pitches en route to his fifth win of the season and now stands a 5-1 this year. With the game still tied at 0-0 in the eighth, Snelten got out of a jam. Snelten forced Illinois to ground into a 4-6-3 double play to keep Minnesota in the game until it scored twice in the bottom of the frame for the eventual win.
The Gophers start the Big Ten Tournament at Target Field on Wednesday, 12:05 p.m., also against Illinois.
