ABOUT SOUTH DAKOTA STATE
South Dakota State enters the Minnesota game with a 10-7 overall record. Having much rest heading into the Minnesota game, the Jackrabbits had their Wednesday, March 20 game cancelled and are seeing their first action since March 16. In a three-game series against Saint Louis, March 15-16, SDSU won two of three games contested. The trip to the Metrodome isn’t the first this year for the Jackrabbits as they competed against Waldorf, Feb. 18 in two games. Andrew Melton has played in all 17 games for the Jackrabbits and holds a .377 batting average. With a team-high 31 total bases, Melton has 10 RBI, six doubles and 23 hits. Aaron Machbitz has a team-best 12 RBI, while Daniel Telford has the best batting average at .444 in 13 games played. Layne Somsen as the most innings pitched for SDSU at 28.2, followed by Stephen Bougher at 27.1. Somsen holds a 0.94 ERA and 30 strikeouts.
Minnesota held competed against Texas and went 1-3 against the Longhorns. On Friday, Tom Windle pitched his third-straight complete game for a 5-1 win. The Gophers, however, would drop a heartbreaker, 5-4 in 10 innings on Saturday and fell, 6-3 Sunday in the series finale. It was the first time Texas had visited Minnesota since the two teams met, dating back to 1924.
Minnesota sophomore pitcher Ty McDevitt will be on the bump against South Dakota State. The right-handed pitcher last started against Kansas State last week and pitched four innings. He scattered three hits, allowed one earned run and walked four. On the season, McDevitt has pitched in seven games and has two starts. Holding a 2.12 ERA, McDevitt has struck out 14 batters in 17 innings.
