FT. WORTH, Texas – The Gopher Baseball team will spend its spring break in the greater Dallas area for a five-game, seven-day trip featuring games against George Washington, UT-Arlington, and No. 9 TCU.
Gophers on the Air
Minnesota will play two televised games over the next two weeks. The series finale against TCU will be aired on Fox Sports Southwest Plus, while the Gophers will make their season debut on Big Ten Network next Sunday in the series finale against Nebraska.
McDevitt 5, Milwaukee 4
Cole McDevitt launched a grand slam and drove in all five runs for the Gophers in a 5-4 win over Milwaukee last Wednesday. It was the first grand slam for Minnesota since Riley Smith hit one against Missouri State on March 26, 2016. McDevitt’s five-RBI game was his second of the season, knocking in five against Chicago State back on Feb. 24.
Minnesota had yet another debut last weekend as rookie left-handed pitcher Danny Kapala took the mound for the first time, striking out two in 1.0 inning of work on Sunday against Creighton. Fellow freshman Jacob Hitz lifted a solo home run for his first collegiate hit in Sunday’s 15-1 win over the Bluejays.
Minnesota’s .309 team batting average ranks 21st nationally and first among Big Ten schools. The Gophers have hit the 16th-most doubles this season, 37, and have the 11th-most total hits, 183. With that comes the second-best on-base percentage in the conference, .397, which ranks no. 38 nationally. The Maroon & Gold also lead the Big Ten in scoring with 117 runs, a top-30 total in all of Division I. Terrin Vavra’s 28 hits rank ninth in the nation. Max Meyer’s four saves are 21st in the country.
Against the Competition
Minnesota has not played any of its foes from its spring break trip during the tenures of current players. John Anderson’s Gophers last met George Washington University in the 1992 NCAA Tournament, blowing out a 19-3 victory on May 23. The Maroon & Gold took 2-of-3 from then-No. 11-ranked TCU in a series back in 2009, while UT-Arlington swept a two-game set from the Gophers in the same season.
Through 10 of the team’s 13 scheduled games this season at U.S. Bank Stadium, the home of the high-scoring Super Bowl LII has proven a pitchers’ park for the Maroon & Gold. Minnesota’s staff has posted a 2.87 ERA in its games inside the People’s Stadium compared to a 4.43 ERA in seven games to start the season. Five Gopher relievers - Sam Bridges, Ryan Duffy, Bubba Horton, Danny Kapala, and Fred Manke - combined to throw 9.0 shutout innings, striking out 11 batters while allowing just three hits at USBS.
Minnesota did not allow a run in the seventh inning during its first 13 games but broke that streak Friday night vs. Creighton when the Bluejays scored three runs. The Gophers have outscored opponents 18-3 in the frame and have actually done a majority of their damage in the mid-late innings, also scoring 20 runs in sixth innings and 15 in the eighth.
Returning All-Big Ten
Minnesota returns four of its six honorees from the All-Big Ten Teams following the 2017 season, all of whom figure into the team’s every day line-up. Junior Cole McDevitt landed on the league’s First Team after batting .314 in league play with four doubles, 11 RBIs, and 14 runs scored. Senior Micah Coffey returns after earning a Second Team selection last year. He batted .370 in league play, lifting a team-best eight doubles and adding 22 RBIs. Senior Toby Hanson returns after driving in a team-high 24 runs against conference competition to land on the Third Team. Sophomore Jordan Kozicky was an All-Freshman Team selection, batting .351 as a utility player.
Ins & Outs
Rookie Joshua Culliver notched a season-high 5.1 innings pitched and four strikeouts in his last outing, earning a no decision in Minnesota’s 5-3 win over Omaha on March 6 ... Patrick Fredrickson’s 6.0 innings pitched on Sunday vs. Creighton represented a season-high for the rookie as did his six strikeouts … After scoring seven runs in the sixth inning of Sunday’s 15-1 win over Creighton, the Gophers have now scored seven or more twice this season having plated eight runs in the seventh inning against Mount St. Mary’s back on Feb. 25, a 16-5 win for Minnesota.
Scouting the Colonials
George Washington (7-9) stumbles into the week after a three-game series sweep by Baylor last weekend ... the Colonials closed out 2017 with a 31-27 overall mark while finishing fourth in the Atlantic 10 at 14-10 ... head coach Gregg Ritchie is in his sixth season ... senior right-hander Brady Renner tossed 6.0 innings with one strikeout for GWU last Tuesday ... senior outfielder Mark Osis has hit .344/.400/.525 with two homers and five doubles this season.
Scouting the Mavericks
UT-Arlington (4-9) has lost five straight entering the week and will meet Texas A&M Tuesday before taking on the Gophers ... the Mavericks finished 30-25 overall last season, posting a 20-10 mark in the Sun Belt ... head coach Darin Thomas is in his 11th season ... freshman right-hander David Moffat made a midweek start for UTA last week, allowing one earned in 4.2 innings, striking out four in a tough-luck loss ... junior infielder Noah Vaughan is batting .313/.431/.557 with three home runs and eight RBIs.
Scouting the Horned Frogs
No. 9 TCU (9-4) fell 7-4 against Vanderbilt last time out in a game played at Dodger Stadium ... the Horned Frogs finished 50-18 last season after reaching the College World Series ... head coach Jim Schlossnagle is in his 15th season ... junior right-hander Jared Janczak has been the team’s Friday night ace, currently 1-1 with a 2.08 ERA in four starts, striking out 28 in 26.0 innings ... junior outfielder Josh Watson is batting .417/.541/.792 with 14 RBIs, four home runs, and 16 runs scored.
