Feb. 12, 2014

Golden Gophers Alec Crawford, Matt Halloran and Ben Meyer have been listed as 2014 Big Ten Players to Watch, announced by the conference Wednesday.

Crawford, a senior right-handed pitcher, posted a 2.28 ERA in the 2013, the best of any returner on the team. He threw 51 1/3 innings in 10 appearances, including nine starts, and went 4-2. Crawford is expected to start in the Gophers’ season opener on Friday against Northern Illinois.

Senior catcher Halloran started 35 games behind the plate in 2013. He was second on the team in doubles (13), RBI (26) and home runs (2).  Halloran led the Gophers with seven multiple-RBI games during the season.

Meyer, a junior, is the returning wins leader on the Gophers’ pitching staff. The right-hander went 5-4 in 15 appearances, including eight starts. Meyer held a 2.80 ERA in 64 1/3 innings pitched, the second most innings on the team. He is scheduled to start Sunday’s game.
