Bloomington, Ind. - The University of Minnesota completed the comeback versus Indiana Friday with a 9-8 victory.
The Gophers trailed 6-0 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning then they scored four runs. Jordan Kozicky led off the inning with a double to left field then scored on a Terrin Vavra single. Vavra then scored three batters later and after a Micah Coffey walk when Jordan Smith doubled to left center. Luke Pettersen capped off the scoring with a single to left field that scored Smith.
Indiana added two more runs putting the Maroon and Gold down 8-4 but a five-run bottom of the eighth completed the comeback. Matt Stemper led off with a single to center field then Smith singled, advancing Stemper to second. A third straight single came from Pettersen, filling the bases for pinch hitter Ben Mezzenga. He doubled off the first base bag, scoring Stemper and Smith.
Eduardo Estrada, Jr. came in to pinch hit then sent a 2-1 pitch over the fence in right field for a three-run home run to give Minnesota a 9-8 lead. The Gophers would not allow any runs in the top of the ninth inning.
Toby Anderson started on the mound for the Gophers, throwing 4.1 innings. He allowed five earned runs on seven hits while striking out two batters. Nick Lackney came in and pitched three innings. He allowed three runs on four hits and struck out four batters.
Tim Shannon picked up his third win of the season after going 0.2 innings. The senior only allowed one hit in his 30th appearance of the season. Fred Manke was credited with his second save of the season after pitching the final inning. He did not allow a hit and struck out the final batter of the game.
The Gophers will play Iowa tomorrow at 9 a.m. central time on the Big Ten Network. They will be the visiting team.
