Final Stats

The University of Minnesota baseball team defeated the South Dakota State Jackrabbits, 5-1, in the final scheduled game at the H.H.H. Metrodome on March 27, 2013. With the venue closing victory, the Gophers advance to 15-11 in the season and South Dakota State drops to 10-8 in the regular overall season.

Ty McDevitt started the game and earned the win as he improves to 2-0 this season. In four innings pitched, he ended the night with five total strikeouts, surrendered just one hit and walked one in the 14 batters he faced. Kolton Emery suffered the loss when he went 3.1 innings, scattered five hits, allowed three runs and struck out one. The Gopher pitching corps as a whole allowed just three walks, four hits and struck out seven.

Andy Henkemeyer led the offensive charge when he went 3-4, had two runs batted in and scored a run. Ryan Abrahamson was 2-3 with two runs scored, while Matt Halloran had two RBI and was 1-3 with a run scored.

Minnesota plated a run in the bottom of the second to take an early 1-0 lead. Abrahamson led off the inning with single through the right side, while Bobby Juan moved him to third when he doubled to left center. Halloran pushed the run across when he hit an RBI grounder for the first Gopher run.

Minnesota added to its lead when Connor Schaefbauer drove home Henkemeyer for a 2-0 lead. Henkemeyer attempted to hit one up the middle and went off starting pitcher Emery and bounced over first baseman Aaron Machbitz's head and trickled into the Gopher bullpen. Schaefbauer hit to the opposite field and squirted one through the left side for his eighth RBI of the season.

Minnesota scored three more runs in the bottom of the fourth to go up, 5-0. Abrahamson started things off when he led off the inning with a hit. Alex LaShomb hit one off the right field baggie to put two in scoring position with one out. Halloran earned his second RBI of the game when he hit a single to center and scored Abrahamson. After Michael Handel pinch hit and was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Henkemeyer delivered a two-RBI single through the left side as both LaShomb and Halloran touched home.

The Gopher pitchers allowed two hits through the first six innings, which were scattered from the second inning and another in the sixth. After starter McDevitt allowed a hit in the second and a walk in the third, he and reliever Drew Ghelfi would send down the next eight batters. After a Ghelfi walk and the Jackrabbits' second hit of the game, he got out of a jam when Jake Ratz struck out looking.

South Dakota State got on the board when it scored in the top of the ninth, but the Gopher damage was done as Minnesota won the game, 5-1.

Minnesota is scheduled to compete at Michigan, March 29-31 in Ann Arbor, Mich. The Gophers and Wolverines at 3:05 p.m. (ET) Friday, and 1:05 p.m. (ET) both Saturday and Sunday.
