The University of Minnesota baseball team fell to the Northern Illinois Huskies 2-1 in the final game of the Dairy Queen Classic, today at the H.H.H. Metrodome. With the loss, Minnesota stands at 6-5 in the regular season, 1-2 in the tournament. The Huskies hold a record of 2-9 in the season and were also 1-2 in the tournament.
Dartmouth won the team trophy as it was 3-0 this weekend. The Big Green's third-baseman Nick Lombardi was the the winner of the Silver Stick Award and the tournament's Most Outstanding Player. Lombardi was 6-12, five RBI, three runs scored, two doubles and a home run.
Ryan Abrahamson had the lone run in the Sunday NIU loss as he hit his first home run of the season in the bottom of the third. Going 1-1 with a walk, Abrahamson belted a home run to left center. JT Canakes had the other Gopher hit in the game, as NIU's Alex Klonowski pitched nine complete innings, allowed the one Abrahamson home run and had eight strikeouts.
Jordan Jess started and went for five innings, allowed five hits, one earned run, walked two and struck out two. Lance Thonvold came in relief and was credited with the loss, his first of the season. Thonvold pitched three innings, allowed four hits, one earned run. Dalton Sawyer also pitched an inning and struck out and walked a batter.
Northern Illinois got on the board when Jeff Zimmerman hit a grounder to score Jamison Wells from third. Wells opened the top of the third on a bunt single and advanced to third on a hit and run after Tommy Hook singled.
Minnesota responded quickly in the bottom of the frame when Ryan Abrahamson sent a ball out of the park with is first home run of his senior campaign.
Both teams remained tied at 1-1 until Connor Duckhorn hit a single through the right side to score Klonowski, who also hit in the game, from second.
The one-run lead would be all that Klonowski would need as he sent the Gophers down in order in the sixth and ninth innings. Canakes singled in the seventh for the other Gopher hit and Abrahamson walked in the eighth, but the Gophers stranded the runners.
Minnesota returns to action this Wednesday March 6, against Hamline at 6:35 p.m. The Gophers then host Western Illinois, March 8-10, also at the Dome. Game times are 6:35 p.m. Friday, 2:05 p.m. Saturday and 1:05 p.m. Sunday.
