The University of Minnesota will be placing 18 stuedent-athletes in summer leagues this year, setting an NCAA and Northwoods League record for most student-athletes placed in one program in back-to-back years.

2017 SUMMER BASEBALL Played for the Green Bay Bullfrogs of the Northwoods League • slashed .269/.340/.304 in 43 games for Green Bay • hit two doubles and two triples, drove in 21 runs and scored 15, while stealing six bases • selected to the 2017 Northwoods League "Major League Dreams" Showcase.
2017 | SOPHOMORE Recorded six hits in 23 games for a .143 batting average • was 2-2 in stolen base attempts • Academic All-Big Ten. 2016 | FRESHMAN Tabbed All-Big Ten Freshman Team • hit .299 and appeared in 36 games in the infield • produced 26 hits, including seven doubles, one triple and one home run • brought in 21 RBI and scored 19 • went 3-for-4 in stealing bases • reached base at a .370 clip • made 12 starts and had four RBI in Big Ten contests. HIGH SCHOOL Graduated from Bishop Kelley High School in 2015 • led team to a 27-8 overall record and 12-2 district mark during his senior campaign • was an All-West Region selection • appeared in 31 games and held a .333 batting average with 42 runs scored • also added 16 RBI, seven doubles • reached base safely at a .444 clip and recorded 78 putouts in the field • Smith helped the Comets win their regional championship and finish as Oklahoma Class 6A state runners-up in 2014 after a 2013 quarterfinal appearance • was named to the Tulsa World All-Metro Second Team as a second baseman after hitting .330 with a .454 on-base percentage and 13 stolen bases • in 2013, batted .460 with a .556 OBP and 17 steals and was named Tulsa World All-Metro and Oklahoma All-State Honorable Mention • also played for the Burkburnett (Texas) Blacksox and was selected to play for Team Oklahoma in the 2013 USA Baseball Midwest Trials and the 2014 Sandlot Scout Team • National Honor Society member with a 4.23 GPA.

Scott and Mary Beth Smith • has previous ties to Minnesota, as his sister, Kylie, and brother-in-law, Aaron Fortunato, were gymnasts for the Gophers • older brother, uncle, father and grandfather (1951 College World Series) were all catchers for Springfield College (Mass.) • born Dec. 18, 1996.

This Saturday, former Major Leaguer and Gopher Baseball alumnus Tim McIntosh will be enshrined in the Cape Cod Baseball League Hall of Fame along with seven others at the Chatham Bars Inn.
