2013-14 Gopher Sports Marketing Internships
PROMOTIONS DIRECTOR INTERNSHIP
Position Description
- Assist the directors of sports marketing in their duties
- Assist with office responsibilities
- Assigned to University of Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic sports
- Baseball, Basketball, Cross Country, Football, Golf, Gymnastics, Hockey, Rowing, Soccer, Softball, Swimming & Diving, Tennis, Track & Field, Volleyball, Wrestling
- Plan and implement the promotions and game day activities for assigned sports
- Develop a promotional plan for assigned sports:
- Coordinate with Event and Facilities Management prior to and during events to ensure proper set up for promotional activities and game day events
- Manage video board operators, camera crew, cheer squad, pep band, music coordinators, public address announcers, and other marketing interns to direct the flow of the game and timeout/intermission promotions
- Write formats for event with timing for band, cheer, promotions, interns, video board operations, and music operators
- Supervise team of promotions assistants and game day interns at each event
- Write scripts for public announcer for each event—highlighting sponsors and describing promotional activities
- Fulfill the sponsorship elements such as logo exposure, PA announcements, promotions, and events
- Improve the atmosphere of each event through the use of games, give-aways, contests, trivia and music, etc
- Oversee design and placement of advertising for events
- Promote athletic events and communicate promotions within the residence halls, Greek system, Minnesota student body, and community groups
- Coordinate hospitality for assigned sports
- Complete necessary end of game and end of year reports
Requirements
- Must hold a minimum of 20 office hours per week and attend one weekly staff meeting
- Responsible for attending home games for assigned sports (including afternoon, night and weekend games)
- Preference given to current GSM interns
PROMOTIONS MANAGER INTERNSHIP
Position Description

- Organize special events related to assigned sport (high school day, community days, senior nights, pack the pool)
- Supervise team of promotions assistants and game day interns at each event
- Write scripts for public announcer for each event—highlighting sponsors and describing promotional activities
- Fulfill the sponsorship elements such as logo exposure, PA announcements, promotions, and events
- Improve the atmosphere of each event through the use of games, give-aways, contests, trivia and music, etc

PROMOTIONS ASSISTANT INTERNSHIP
Position Description
- Assist promotion directors and promotions managers of sports marketing
- Assist with office responsibilities
- Assigned to University of Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic sports
- Baseball, Basketball, Cross Country, Football, Golf, Gymnastics, Hockey, Rowing, Soccer, Softball, Swimming & Diving, Tennis, Track & Field, Volleyball, Wrestling
- Assist Promotions Manager on the promotions plan, advertising and game day atmosphere
- Assist with any sponsor involvement prior to and during events
- Supervise game day interns at each event
- Gather game day promotions materials
- Organize featured group days (High School Day, Youth Day, FCA Night, Boys and Girls Club)
Requirements
- Must hold a minimum of 9 office hours a week
- Responsible for attending home games for assigned sports (including afternoon, night and weekend games)
- Required to work a minimum of 8 events over the course of the internship
MARKETING OFFICE INTERNSHIP
Position Description
- Assist all Gopher Sports Marketing Staff in their duties
- Responsible for special project
- Goldys Kids Club, Student Outreach, Internship Program, and Social Media
- Team with Promotions Directors, Managers, and Assistants on the promotions plan, advertising and game day atmosphere for a variety of sports
- Assist with any sponsor involvement prior to and during events
Requirements
- Must hold a minimum of 10 office hours a week
- Required to work a minimum of 10 events over the course of the internship
HR INTERN
Position Description
- Responsible for internship program
- Liaison between game day interns and Marketing Assistant Directors
- Schedule staff for home games and non sporting events
- Plan Professional Development Workshops (Resume and Job Interviewing)
- Plan fun events for interns: Holiday Intern Party, Flag Football, Ice Skating, and more
- Create evaluation forms for Marketing Directors to evaluate interns
- Update job descriptions
- Good organizational skills, communication skills, and attention to detail
- Preferred major: Human Resources or related field
Requirements
- Must hold a minimum of 10 office hours a week
- Required to work a minimum of 10 events over the course of the internship
- Required to begin two-week training program in May
GAME DAY INTERNSHIP
Position description
- Assist Gopher Sports Marketing staff with duties
- Implement in-game promotions during Gopher Sporting events
- Assist with game day duties such as working with national anthem singers and half-time performers
- Coordinate distribution of fan giveaways
- Work with the pep band, spirit squad, and Goldy
- Assist with any sponsor involvement at events
- Ensure proper set up of all banners, tables, and signage at events
Requirements
- Required to work a minimum of 20 events over the course of the internship

MUSIC INTERNSHIP
Job Description
Please apply specifically for this internship!
Position description
- Play music for various sporting events including: Men’s Gymnastics, Women’s Hockey, Women’s Gymnastics, Women’s Basketball, Baseball, Wrestling, Men’s Basketball, Softball, Volleyball and Soccer.
- Compile lists of music that reflect the “family-friendly environment” of Gopher sporting
events while maintaining an up-beat and energetic atmosphere
- Compile a list of situational and event specific audio clips that bolster the spectator
experience and contribute to the flow and energy of the game
- Work with Sport Managers to prepare music for pre-game, in-game, post-game, player
walkout, etc.
Pay
- Music interns will be paid $7.25/hour for events worked.
- Music that is purchased for use at events will be reimbursed to the purchaser.
Requirements
- Basic knowledge of iTunes and computer music programs
- Willing to learn and become proficient with the use GameOps Commander Software
- Basic understanding of the culture of the sports to which you are assigned
- Ability to cover all events for assigned sports
- Willing to be adaptable to game flow changes and thinking on your feet
- Office hours may be necessary to compile playlists and load songs onto the music laptops
- Other duties and responsibilities as assigned by Sport Managers
