Dec. 7, 2011

A total of 59 University of Minnesota student-athletes have earned spots on the Big Ten's 2011 fall Academic All-Big Ten teams, conference officials announced today.

To be eligible for Academic All-Big Ten selection, student-athletes must be letterwinners in at least their second academic year at their institution and carry a career grade-point average (GPA) of 3.0 or better.

Minnesota's fall sports include men's and women's cross country, football, women's soccer and women's volleyball.

Football boasted 18 members on the all-academic team. Linebackers Keanon Cooper and Mike Rallis were the defensive headliners of the group, while the offensive was represented by four linemen - Jimmy Gjere, Ed Olson, Ryan Orton and Ryan Wynn.

Women's cross country registered the highest number of honorees with 21. The list represents 50 percent of the eligible women's cross country student-athletes, including All-Big Ten and All-Regional performer Stephanie Price and All-Regional selection Ashlie Decker.

Women's soccer continued their superior run of academic form this fall with 10 student-athletes earning all-academic honors. Second team All-Big Ten defender Josie Solie and All-Big Ten Tournament Team midfielder Shari Eckstromheadlined the list.

The women's volleyball team was also well represented with six players receiving spots on the all-academic team, including first team All-Big Ten outside hitter Ashley Wittman. Wittman, an NCAA All-Mideast Region selection, recently helped the Gophers advance to this weekend's NCAA Regional, which will be held Friday and Saturday at the Sports Pavilion.

Men's cross country had four student-athletes named to the all-academic team, lead by senior Pieter Gagnon, who posted top-20 finishes at both the Big Ten Championship and the Midwest Championships.
