The University of Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletics department will hold a combination of eight food drives at various U of M athletic events. The food drives will begin this weekend at the men's and women's hockey series, located at Mariucci and Ridder Arena.
The food drive will begin prior to the 7 p.m. (Friday) and 7:30 p.m. game (Saturday) at men's hockey and Mariucci Arena as Minnesota hosts North Dakota. Next door at Ridder Arena, food donations can be made at the 6 p.m. (Friday) 4 p.m. (Saturday) games as the women's hockey team hosts Minnesota Duluth. On Sunday, Nov. 13 a food drive will be held at the Sports Pavilion as the volleyball team hosts Michigan at 1 p.m., followed by Williams Arena on Nov. 14 as men's basketball hosts South Dakota State at 7 p.m. The last two food drives will also be held at Williams Arena in conjunction with women's basketball's Subway Classic on Nov. 19-20.
Along with the Student-Athlete Advisory Council and their group, Maroon-Madness, Gopher athletes will volunteer and stand at multiple arena entrances before and during the games asking for charitable contributions for food or monetary donations. This is the 12th year the University of Minnesota has held a food drive at various Gopher athletic events.
The food collected during all the drives will go to Second Harvest Heartland, the upper Midwest's largest hunger-relief organization. Also, when money is contributed, the organization has the ability to distribute $9 of groceries for every dollar donated, according to Second Harvest Heartland’s website.
