Gophers Place 86 on Big Ten Distinguished Scholar List
The Gophers' women's track & field/cross country totaled 23 honorees.

July 11, 2012

A total of 86 University of Minnesota student-athletes have earned places on the 2011-12 Big Ten Conference Distinguished Scholar Athletes list, conference officials announced today. The number of Minnesota student-athletes earning Distinguished Scholar honors for 2011-12 is an increase of 18 over last year, when 68 Gophers earned the distinction.

To be considered a Big Ten Distinguished Scholar, student-athletes must earn a minimum grade-point average (GPA) of 3.7 or higher for the previous academic year. The Distinguished Scholar program was established in February of 2008 by the Big Ten Faculty Representatives to supplement the Academic All-Big Ten program. The Academic All-Big Ten threshold is a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher for a student-athlete's academic career.

The Minnesota list represented 22 of the Gophers' 25 sports. Minnesota's largest contingent came from the women's track & field/cross country team, which totaled 23 honorees.
