A total of 149 University of Minnesota student-athletes have earned spots on the 2012 Spring Academic All-Big Ten teams, league officials announced today. Minnesota’s total is up from last spring when it placed 123 on the list.

To be eligible for Academic All-Big Ten selection, student-athletes must be letterwinners in at least their second academic year at their institution and carry a career grade-point average (GPA) of 3.0 or better.

Minnesota's spring Big Ten sports include baseball, men's and women's golf, men's and women's hockey, men's and women's tennis, men's and women's track & field, softball and rowing.

Of Minnesota’s 149 student-athletes honored, six finished the semester with a perfect GPA of 4.0 or better, including men’s track & field member Trey Davis, a graduate student studying accounting and women’s track & field members Sharyn Dahl (senior – Inter College Program), Amy Kubat (senior – Psychology), Claire Rindo (senior – Family Social Science), Megan Smith (senior – Kinesiology) and Kelly Stalpes (senior – Biology).

The Gophers track & field teams combined for 72 of the school’s 149 honorees, with the women's squad accounting for 37 honorees and the men's program boasting 35.

Other notable academic performances on the men's side were turned in by the baseball and hockey teams, which each placed 13 student-athletes on the Academic All-Big Ten team and the tennis team, which had four of its student-athletes earn Academic All-Big Ten honors.

On the women's side, the rowing program and hockey team both reached double figures with 23 and 15 honorees, respectively, while softball placed four on the list. Junior Jackie Shepherd was the lone Gopher golfer to be honored by the conference.

Overall, the conference’s list of honored student-athletes features 109 baseball players, 87 softball players, 132 women’s rowers, 51 men’s and 36 women’s golfers, 50 men’s and 58 women’s tennis athletes, 163 men’s and 198 women’s track and field standouts and 139 men’s (representing ice hockey, volleyball, lacrosse, fencing, rowing and pistol and rifle) and 131 women’s (representing bowling, water polo, ice hockey, fencing, synchronized swimming, lightweight rowing, lacrosse and pistol and rifle) at-large athletes.
