MINNEAPOLIS - On Wednesday afternoon, the Big Ten Conference announced that 135 Gopher student-athletes had been placed on the Academic All-Big Ten Teams this spring to cap off a successful year for the Maroon and Gold both in competition and in the classroom.
The Big Ten recognized a total of 1,216 spring and at-large sport student-athletes for their commitment to excellence in the classroom. Minnesota competes in nine spring sports including baseball, men's and women's golf, men's and women's tennis, men's and women's track and field, softball and rowing. Women's ice hockey is also included as an at-large sport at the University of Minnesota.
To be eligible for Academic All-Big Ten selection, student-athletes must be letterwinners who are in at least their second academic year at their institution and carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or higher. Two Minnesota track and field student-athletes, Alena Brooks and Cassy Opitz, have maintained unblemished cumulative GPAs.
The track and field teams totaled 56 honorees, with the women's team leading the way for the Maroon and Gold with 37 honored student-athletes.
Baseball and rowing reached double digits with 17 and 23 respectively while the national runner-up ice hockey team placed seven on the list.
