“TCF Bank Stadium is one of the most aesthetically pleasing venues in the United States and we’re honored to host the first international soccer games there,” said Relevent Sports Chief Executive Officer Charlie Stillitano. “What better welcome for Minnesotans than to see Manchester City and Olympiacos play on their own home field. We know the Gophers and the Minnesota soccer community has been waiting years to see a game of this caliber played in their backyard.”
Founded in 1880, Manchester City has become one of the world’s top clubs after being purchased in 2008 by the Abu Dhabi United Group. The club went on to qualify for the UEFA Champions League in 2012 and win the FA Cup the same year. A year later, the “Citizens” won the Premier League, its first league title in 44 years.
The club is coached by Chilean Manuel Pellegrini and features stars such as Belgian defender Vincent Kompany and Argentine goalscorer Sergio Aguero, creative Spanish midfielder David Silva and three-time defending African Player of the Year, Yaya Toure.
“I’m really looking forward to the Olympiakos game in Minneapolis. I love visiting the USA, and I know the players are all looking forward to playing in Minneapolis for the first time. TCF Bank Stadium looks an unbelievable venue, and it will be fantastic to show our skills for our fans out there. The fans are in for a great occasion, and we look forward to seeing as many of them as possible in Minneapolis,” said Manchester City and England goalkeeper, Joe Hart.
One of the most successful teams in all of Europe, Olympiacos has won a total of 40 league titles, 26 Greek Cup titles and four Greek Super Cups. The club recently reached the Round of 16 of the 2013-14 UEFA Champions League where it will face Manchester United.
Coached by Michel, Spain National Team and Real Madrid legend, the club’s diverse roster includes former Barcelona striker Javier Saviola, Greek defender Aavram Papadopolous and Paraguayn striker Nelson Haedo Valdez.
“Εven the name of the city is intriguing. Minneapolis; a complex word deriving from MIN, which means water and from the Greek word POLIS, which stands for city. It is therefore in the water city, where Olympiacos will face the great Manchester City. We promise to honor all football fans who will come to the TCF Bank Stadium and celebrate with us during this great match. We are really looking forward to it,” said Olympiacos FC head coach and Real Madrid legend, Michel.
