NHL: Vanek, Martin Have Super Sundays

Thomas Vanek just keeps scoring and scoring -- the former Gopher improved his NHL-leading point total to 19 on Sunday with a three-point night in Buffalo's 4-3 loss to Florida.

Vanek wasted little time on Sunday -- scoring his eighth goal of the season just 2:46 into the game to give the Sabres an early 1-0 lead. Vanek, who ranks second in the NHL in goals this season, and linemate Jason Pominville have had some great chemistry already this season as you can see by the goal below.

The NHL's Third Star for the month of January, Vanek also leads the league with 11 assists this season with a pair of helpers on Sunday including this one to Cody Hodgson.

One final note on Vanek...of Buffalo's 27 goals this season, Vanek has scored or assisted on all but eight of them.

Martin Sparks Pens Win

Much like his aforementioned former teammate, Paul Martin lit the lamp early on Sunday for Pittsburgh's first goal in a 6-3 win at Washington. The defenseman, who also had four blocked shots and had 27:41 of ice time, picked up his first goal of the season (fourth point) when Sidney Crosby dropped a faceoff back to Martin on the point and the former Gopher slid a wrist shot through the crowd and in at 3:37 of the first period.

Looks like all that offseason training has paid off for Martin.

Noteworthy:
*Monday NHL Schedule - Carolina at Toronto (Kessel), Dallas (Goligoski) at Colorado (Johnson), Vancouver (Ballard, Schroeder) at Edmonton.
