Gopher sophomore Amanda Kessel helped Team USA to an 8-0 victory over Sweden in today's Four Nations Cup game. Kessel scored on the power play 16 and a half minutes into the second period to put the U.S. ahead 5-0. Kendall Coyne and Jillian Dempsey had assists on Kessel's goal.

Former Gopher Gigi Marvin (2006-09) had an assist on Kelli Stack's third-period goal to put Team USA up 6-0.

"It was a good start for us," said Katey Stone, head coach of the 2011 U.S. Women's National Team. "Our players kept it simple and moved the puck quickly. It's going to be that hardworking effort that makes a difference."

Both the U.S. and Sweden were scoreless in the first period, but Team USA took the lead on a goal less than three minutes into the second period. The Americans scored five goals in the second period and three in the third to bring the final tally to 8-0.

Kessel played on USA's second line with Hilary Knight and Kendall Coyne. Gopher Jen Schoullis played on the fourth line with Julie Chu and Jillian Dempsey. Marvin was paired with Kacey Bellamy for the defense.

In earlier action, Gopher defenseman Mira Jalosuo and Team Finland lost to Canada 5-0. Jalosuo played with defensive partner Tea Villilä.

In tournament play tomorrow, the U.S and Canada face off at 8:30 a.m. central, while Finland plays Sweden at noon. Follow live stats here.
