Blog: Mike Grimm Previews the Wildcats

The Gopher Radio Network's Mike Grimm gives fans five things to watch (and listen) for in Saturday's game against Northwestern:

1. BEND, DON'T BREAK: Northwestern runs a fast-paced spread offense that will have the Gopher defense huffing and puffing. Minnesota's defense will have to be good in short yardage situations, on third down, and red zone defense. N-U will get yards. Minnesota's motto will have to be -- allow yards, not points.

2. QB SHUFFLE: Northwestern's double-headed quarterback situation with Dan Persa and Kain Colter is unique. These two are basically scat backs who have outstanding throwing arms. If you try to tackle them high, they will bounce up like a punching bag and keep on going. The key is to tackle these guys properly.

3. OFFENSIVE FOOTBALL: While Northwestern's offense is second in the Big Ten in yards and points, the Wilcats defense ranks near the bottom of the league. To have a chance, the Gopher offense will need to be at its best behind quarterback MarQueis Gray and receiver Da'Jon McKnight.

4. OPPORTUNITY KNOCKS: The Gophers will need to create turnover opportunities through their defense and then turn those take-a-ways into points on offense. As mentioned, Northwestern will move the ball, but they will also give it away if you make them.

5. ROAD SHOW: This is the final road trip of the season for the Gophers. They have not won a game away from Minneapolis this year, so this is the last chance. Remember, when Minnesota ended last year on a two-game winning streak, it started with a road win in the state of Illinois. Maybe these guys can make it two years in a row in the Land of Lincoln against two different teams.
