The initial brackets for the 2008 Big Ten Wrestling Championships were finalized at Friday afternoon’s coaches meeting in Williams Arena. All 11 Big Ten head coaches gathered to review the preliminary seeds (which were selected via a ballot submitted by all conference head coaches earlier this week) and decide upon the final seeding for this weekend’s event.
Only one change was made to the pre-seeds, and it involved Gopher junior Dustin Schlatter. Schlatter, currently ranked third nationally at 149 pounds, was moved to the No. 2 seed as Michigan’s Josh Churella was dropped to No. 3.
Despite being pinned by Ohio State’s Lance Palmer Feb. 24, Schlatter still owns a career 94-4 record and has never lost to Churella in three career matches, including last year’s Big Ten final and an exhibition match earlier this season at the 2007 NWCA All-Star Classic.
Saturday’s wrestling will get underway at 11 a.m. in Williams Arena with the preliminary rounds. Semifinals will take place Saturday evening, while Sunday’s championship round will begin at noon. The 10 championship matches are scheduled to begin at approximately 2 p.m. and will be televised live by the Big Ten Network.
