Inscription on Men's version of Plaques Steeped in history and tradition, Williams Arena is widely revered as one of the greatest college basketball venues in the nation. Its original floor was installed in 1928 and over the years was the site of 710 Golden Gopher victories and four Big Ten regular-season titles. All told, Minnesota won over 71 percent of its game on the fabled surface. A long and illustrious list of college basketball's greatest players ran the Williams Arena hardwood through the years, including 5 Basketball Hall of Famers, 20 All-Americans and 53 NBA Draft Picks. In its final season in "The Barn" in 2009, the Williams Arena floor served as the foundation for the Gophers' 16-3 home-court record and the program's first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2005. |
Inscription on Women's version of Plaques Williams Arena is widely revered as one of the greatest college basketball venues in the nation. The raised floor of "The Barn" became the home of the Golden Gopher women's basketball team in the 1970s and, after a nine-year stint in the Sports Pavilion, Williams welcomed the enthusiastic fans back in 2002. The move back to "The Barn" also ushered in the most successful period in Minnesota women's basketball history, highlighted by the Golden Gophers' trek to the 2004 Final Four in front of two record-setting NCAA Tournament crowds. An impressive list of All-Americans graced Williams Arena's 94-foot stage in maroon and gold through the years, including Lindsay Whalen, Linda Roberts, Deb Hunter, Carol Ann Shudlick, Janel McCarville and Laura Coenen. |
