Cheerleading at Minnesota

One of the most visible traditions in sports was born more than 100 years ago at the University of Minnesota. In the fall of 1898, student Johnny Campbell offered to lead organized cheers at football games. This offer came after three straight losses, and a subsequent editorial in the school paper that said, “Any plan that would stir up enthusiasm for athletics would be helpful.” Campbell had a plan, and he began to lead organized cheers at the home game against Northwestern. Minnesota won 17-6, and much of the credit went to Campbell and his “yell leaders.” At that late-season game, the tradition of cheerleading was born.

2009-2010 Mission Statement
It is our mission to uphold the pride and tradition of the University of Minnesota. We will strive to consistently work hard, practice and perform with heart, dedicate ourselves to this program, and above all have fun. We recognize that this program is not built on one person, but our spirit squad as a whole.
As COACHES, we will strive to instill tradition, honor, commitment and pride in our team and in each other to reach our goals. We will work to be organized, consistent and supportive to make this an exemplary program across the nation.
We, as the ALL GIRL CHEER TEAM, will strive to uphold the highest standards of the university as athletes, students and individuals.  We vow to honor old traditions, as we create new ones throughout the year.  As a team, we will push and support each other to achieve higher expectations than in previous seasons.  With the help of a motivational coaching staff, we will be a class act with pride for ourselves, our team and the university.  We will always wear the “M” with pride.  Go Gophers!
As the 2009-2010 U of M DANCE TEAM, we will strive to carry past traditions with us as we journey into future experiences, creating a legacy of our own.  In doing so, we hope that our passion and love will inspire those around us to do the same.  We will embrace each and every moment, in the moment, as we work to embody the spirit and pride of the University of Minnesota.
The year of the Gopher will begin with a Fur-tastic opening to a new dynasty of on-campus football.  GOLDY GOPHER will continue to bring school spirit and class to everyone in Gopher Nation.  Goldy will be the hardest working, shenanigans-filled Gopher between the two great oceans; originating from the mighty Mississippi.  Goldy will continue the University of Minnesota’s tradition by doin’ work, takin’ names, bein’ the best and taking home the hardware!!
As the 2009-2010 CO-ED CHEER TEAM, we, as a family, will uphold old traditions and instill new traditions among our student body and university alike.  As student athletes, we will show our strength, pride and belief in each other through accountability and being prepared.  While being professional on and off the field, we will still strive to remain positive and have fun.  HYGC!
We, as HOCKEY CHEERLEADERS at the University of Minnesota, vow to uphold the values and traditions of the Spirit Squad by representing the school and ourselves with pride.  We will respect ourselves and others while we motivate the crowd and strive to become the best hockey cheer team in the NCAA.  We vow to continue to be role models for other cheer teams and community.  Lastly, we will innovatively combine cheerleading, dance and figure skating skills while we grow as a team, a program and individuals.  Go Gophers!
As the BASKETBALL CHEER TEAM, we will strive for excellence as students and athletes. We will hold ourselves to the highest standards in practice and on the court, in order to continuously improve our skills. With hard work and dedication we will unite as a team and take pride in representing the University of Minnesota.
