Minnesota defeated the Pro-Alumni 3-0 at the Metrodome on Saturday, Feb. 6. The game was highlighted by strong pitching by the Golden Gopher hurler, who pitched for both sides. Luke Rasmussen (Northfield, Minn.), TJ Oakes (Jordan, Minn.), Allen Bechstein (Apple Valley, Minn.), Billy Soule (Hamel, Minn.) and Phil Isaksson (Eau Claire, Wis.) combined to shut out the Pro-Alumni. Rasmussen started and pitched 2.2 shutout innings, and did not give up a hit while striking out two batters. Bechstein pitched 1.2 shutout innings to pick up the win. Isaksson picked up the save as he pitched 1.2 shutout innings. Oakes and Soule pitched 1.2 and 1.1 shutout innings respectively. Seth Rosin (Shoreview, Minn.) started for the Pro-Alumni and pitched 2.1 shutout innings, gave up a hit, walked two and struck out three. Cullen Sexton (Plover, Wis.) struck out two batters and pitched 1.2 shutout innings, while Scott Matyas (North Prairie, Wis.) retired all four batters he faced. Scott Fern (Eau Claire, Wis.) and Tim Ryan (Eagan, Minn.) also pitched one shutout inning apiece. Freshman Kevin Kray (Maple Grove, Minn.) took the loss, as he gave up two hits and three runs in one inning of work. Offensively the Golden Gophers were led by Nick O'Shea (Blaine, Minn.) who went 1-for-4 with a triple and three RBI. AJ Pettersen (Minnetonka, Minn.) had the only multi-hit game for either team, as he went 2-for-4 with a run. Justin Gominsky (Mahtomedi, Minn.) drew two walks and scored a run, while Michael Kvasnicka (Lakeville, Minn.) scored the other run for Minnesota. Kyle Geason (Eden Prairie, Minn.) and Kurt Schlangen (Albany, Minn.) also had hits for the Golden Gophers. Robb Quinlan reached base twice for the Pro-Alumni and was 1-for-3, while Dan Wilson went 1-for-3 as well. The game was a scoreless tied until Minnesota took the lead with three runs in the bottom of the fifth. Gominsky and Kvasnicka sandwiched a pair of walks around a single by Pettersen to load the bases. O'Shea delivered a three-run triple to left center field to put Minnesota ahead 3-0. Kray pitched around the next two batters to keep it at a three-run deficit. Minnesota also flashed the leather as Geason made great diving play on a line drive to end the fourth, and O'Shea did the same thing in the top of the fifth. The Golden Gophers lead the all-time series 9-7-1 against the Pro-Alumni. Minnesota will start its season on Friday, Feb. 19 against Akron at 3:05 p.m. in Fort Myers, Fla. The Golden Gophers will also face the Zips on Saturday, Feb. 20 at 2:05 p.m. and Sunday, Feb. 21 at 1:05 p.m. |
